ভারী বৃষ্টি ও তুষারপাতের কারণে তুরস্কের দক্ষিণ-পূর্বাঞ্চলে ধ্বংসস্তুপের নীচে আটকা পড়াদের উদ্ধার কাজ ব্যাহত হচ্ছে।

সোমবারের ভূমিকম্পে এ পর্যন্ত তুরস্ক ও সিরিয়ায় নিহতের সংখ্যা পাঁচ হাজার ছাড়ানোর পথে। আহতের সংখ্যাও ১৫ হাজারের বেশি।

বিশ্ব স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থা বলছে, নাটকীয়ভাবে মৃতের সংখ্যা ধারনার চেয়েও বেশি বাড়তে পারে।

৭.৮ মাত্রার এই ভূমিকম্পের পরবর্তী দিনেও অব্যাহত আছে উদ্ধারকাজ। তবে তীব্র শীত ও বৃষ্টির কারণে উদ্ধার অভিযান ব্যাহত হচ্ছে।

বিভিন্ন বিশ্ব গণমাধ্যমের খবর বলছে, ধ্বংসস্তুপের নীচ থেকে আটকা পড়াদের সাহায্য আকুতি ও চিৎকার শোনা যাচ্ছে। 

স্থানীয় এক বাসিন্দা জানিয়েছেন, অনেকেই বাঁচার আকুতি জানালেও উদ্ধারকারীরা তাদের কাছে যেতে পারছে না। দেনিজ নামের ওই বাসিন্দা বলেছেন, ‘তারা বলছে আমাদের বাঁচাও কিন্তু আমরা তাদের বাঁচাতে পারছি না।’

বিদ্যুৎ নেই, সাথে বৃষ্টি ও ঠাণ্ডার কারণে আটকে পড়া অনেককেই উদ্ধার করা সম্ভব নাও হতে পারে বলে শঙ্কা করছে স্থানীয়রা।

জাতিসংঘ জানিয়েছে, তুরস্কের দক্ষিণ অঞ্চলে আঘাত হানা ৭ দশমিক ৮ মাত্রার ভূমিকম্প ৮০ বছরের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী।

জাতিসংঘের মানবাধিকার বিষয়ক সমন্বয়ক কমিটি (ইউএনওসিএইচএ) বলেছে, ১৯৩৯ সালের পর এটা সর্বোচ্চ শক্তিশালী ভূমিকম্প।

এক বিবৃতিতে ইউএনওসিএইচএ বলেছে, মানবিক সহায়তার জন্য বিশ্বস্বাস্থ্যসহ কয়েকটি সংস্থার অনুসন্ধান ও উদ্ধারকারী দল পাঠানো হয়েছে। জাতিসংঘসহ অংশীদারেরা সরেজমিনে পরিস্থিতি গভীরভাবে পর্যবেক্ষণ করছে এবং পীড়িত অঞ্চলে জরুরি তহবিলের বিষয়টিও বিবেচনা করা হচ্ছে।

সোমবার তুরস্কের স্থানীয় সময় ভোর ৪টা ১৭ মিনিটে শক্তিশালী ভূমিকম্প হয়। সিরিয়ার সীমান্তবর্তী তুরস্কের গাজিয়ানতেপ শহরের কাছে ছিল ভূমিকম্পটির কেন্দ্র। ভূপৃষ্ঠের ১৭ দশমিক ৭ কিলোমিটার গভীরে ছিল এই ভূমিকম্পের উৎপত্তিস্থল। ভূমিকম্পের পর অর্ধশতাধিক পরাঘাত (আফটারশক) হয়।

সর্বশেষ তথ্যানুসারে,  ভূমিকম্পে তুরস্ক ও সিরিয়ায় নিহত মানুষের সংখ্যা বেড়ে ৪৯শ জন হয়েছে।

তুরস্কের দুর্যোগ ব্যবস্থাপনাবিষয়ক সংস্থার পক্ষ থেকে মঙ্গলবার জানানো হয়, দেশটিতে নিহত মানুষের সংখ্যা বেড়ে হয়েছে ২ হাজার ৯২১ জন। আহত ১৫ হাজার ৮৩৪ জন।

অন্যদিকে, সিরিয়ায় এখন পর্যন্ত ১ হাজার ৪৪৪ জনের নিহত হওয়ার তথ্য পাওয়া গেছে। আহত ৩ হাজার ৪১১ জন।

মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ভূতাত্ত্বিক জরিপ (ইউএসজিএস) এর তথ্যানুসারে, স্থানীয় সময় সোমবার সকালে তুরস্কের দক্ষিণাঞ্চলে ৭.৮ মাত্রার ভূমিকম্পের পর থেকে ৪.০ বা তার বেশি মাত্রার অন্তত ১০০টি আফটারশক হয়েছে।

মূল ভূমিকম্পের সময় যত বাড়ে, আফটারশকের ফ্রিকোয়েন্সি এবং তীব্রতাও কমতে থাকে। তবে ৫ থেকে ৬ প্লাস মাত্রার আফটারশক এখনও ঘটতে পারে এবং মূল ভূমিকম্পের সঙ্গে ক্ষয়ক্ষতির ঝুঁকি আরও বাড়িয়ে দেয়। আফটারশকগুলো উদ্ধারকারী দল এবং ধ্বংসস্তুপে আটকা পড়া জীবিতদের জন্য একটি ক্রমাগত হুমকির কারণ হয়ে থাকে।

রিপোর্ট লেখা পর্যন্ত চার হাজার ৩৭২ জনের মৃত্যুর খবর পাওয়া গেছে। এর মধ্যে শুধু তুরস্কেই মারা গেছে দুই হাজার ৯২১ জন। আর আহত হয়েছে ১৫ হাজার ৮৩৪ জন। তুরস্কের দুর্যোগ সেবা বিভাগের প্রধান ইউনুস সেজের এই তথ্য নিশ্চিত করেছেন।

অন্যদিকে, একই ঘটনায় প্রতিবেশী সিরিয়ায় মৃতের সংখ্যা বেড়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে এক হাজার ৪১ জনে। দেশটিতে আহত হয়েছে তিন হাজার ৫৩১ জন।
জানা গেছে, স্থানীয় সময় সোমবার ভোরে তুরস্কের দক্ষিণাঞ্চলীয় কাহরামানমারাস প্রদেশে এই ভূমিকম্প আঘাত হানে। বিগত একশ’ বছরেরও বেশি সময় ধরে তুরস্কে আঘাত হানা সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী ভূমিকম্প এটি।

সংবাদমাধ্যম সিএনএন জানিয়েছে, মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ভূতাত্ত্বিক জরিপের (ইউএসজিএস) তথ্যানুযায়ী, ভূমিকম্পের মাত্রা ছিল ৭.৮ এবং এর উৎসস্থল ছিল দক্ষিণ তুরস্কের গাজিয়ানটেপ প্রদেশের পূর্ব দিকে নুরদাগি শহর থেকে ২৬ কিলোমিটার পূর্বে ভূগর্ভের প্রায় ২৪.১ কিলোমিটার গভীরে।

তবে তুরস্কের সংবাদমাধ্যম আনাদোলু এজেন্সি জানিয়েছে, তুরস্কের দুর্যোগ ও জরুরি ব্যবস্থাপনা কর্তৃপক্ষ দাবি করেছে, সোমবার স্থানীয় সময় ভোর ৪টা ১৭ মিনিটে আঘাত হানা ওই ভূমিকম্পের মাত্রা ছিল ৭.৪ এবং উৎপত্তিস্থল ছিল পাজারচিক জেলায়। এটি ঘটে ৭ কিলোমিটার গভীরে।

আনাদোলু এজেন্সির প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়েছে, দিয়ারবাকির ও গাজিয়ানটেপসহ অন্যান্য দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব প্রদেশ এবং লেবানন ও সিরিয়া, সাইপ্রাসসহ প্রতিবেশী দেশগুলোতেও এই ভূকম্পন অনুভূত হয়েছে।

আবহাওয়াবিদদের মতে, শক্তিশালী ভূমিকম্পের পরে আফটারশকগুলো কয়েক ঘণ্টা এবং এমনকি কয়েক দিনও অব্যাহত থাকতে পারে।

After almost 84 years, a terrible earthquake has struck the Middle Eastern countries of Turkey and Syria. Yesterday morning, the first phase of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake started in the Turkish city of Gaziantep on the Syrian border. After 12 hours, Turkey was shaken by another earthquake. According to the latest reports, the duration of the first earthquake was 40 seconds. At least more than two and a half thousand buildings and structures collapsed instantly in the earthquake. The Turkish city was destroyed. Sleeping people were buried under the collapsed buildings. According to reports till evening, 2600 dead bodies have been recovered from the rubble. More than 8 thousand people were rescued in serious condition. Most of the casualties occurred in Turkey. President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed grief over the incident. Sources: BBC, Reuters, CNN, The Guardian, Al Jazeera. According to reports, The first earthquake occurred yesterday at 4:17 am local time. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Turkish city of Gaziantep on the border with Syria. The magnitude of the earthquake was 7.8 on the Richter scale. After almost 84 years, Turkey was shaken by such a strong earthquake. Later in the afternoon, another 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit the same area. All in all, the situation is dire. Bad weather is hampering rescue operations. The weather forecast says that there is a risk of heavy rain in the earthquake affected areas of Turkey. And the temperature may drop to 3-4 degrees. Meanwhile, Turkey's Vice President Fuat Oktay said that at least 1,718 buildings collapsed in Turkey due to the 7.8-magnitude earthquake. He said, Many people are trapped in the rubble. Moreover, more than 900 buildings have collapsed in Gaziantep and Kahramanmaras provinces of Turkey. In the meantime, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad held an urgent meeting with the cabinet members regarding the damage and the necessary measures. At least 900 people were killed in the quake in government-controlled areas of the country, according to Syrian state television. Another 1500 people were injured. These areas include Aleppo, Hama, Cities like Latakia and Tartus. In addition, at least 147 people were killed and more than 340 injured in the earthquake in rebel-held areas of Syria. Many families are still trapped under the rubble. So the number of casualties could be more. A second earthquake struck southeastern Turkey. The epicenter of this earthquake was near the city of Kharmanmaras. The latest earthquake was also felt in Damascus. However, details of the damage were not immediately available. According to the news, thousands of people are buried under the rubble. Rescuers continue to search through the rubble of the collapsed building. 45 countries, including Western military alliance NATO, European Union, have offered cooperation to Turkey.
